The back plate has a sleek shape that seems to mix elements from several popular aftermarket and rounded looks. I rather liked the sight they provided and found a wide notch to restore vision quickly when I had to fixate on the edges of my character. Power sights are common in the aftermarket and often require custom milling, so an attractive and efficient off-the-shelf assembly is much better than most modern guns.
During pistol trials, the French military demanded a safety cut-off magazine to force John Browning and FN's Dieudonné Saive to include what eventually became the P-35 in the surrender. When the French went with another pistol, the Belgians quickly adopted the design, and both Axis and Allied forces issued it in World War II. The cutout prevents the pistol from firing unless the magazine is inserted. Most models have since neglected the feature, and many High Power owners have opted for it to upgrade their keyboards. Springfield wisely went without a magazine cut-off in the SA-35. Also like Springfield's M1911 offerings, the new SA-35 features a traditional pin arrangement known as the Series 80 pin stock.
The original P-35 and nearly all subsequent high powers were saddled with a series of awkward or awkwardly shaped thumb guards. I have tried most of the safeties on the custom handgun market and my SA-35 design has come so far. It's still well-formed and occasionally positively "skips" with about ideal resistance. SA-35 shooters fall into two camps, those who ride the thumb safety up high and those who take the pistol with the thumb safety under the lock. Both camps find Springfield a part of their hearts.
