Kirtland AFB is located in the high desert of north-central New Mexico in Bernalillo County. The base is located southeast of Albuquerque. North of the base is Rio Rancho. Santa Fe is in the northeast.

Processing services are provided at the Base Welcome Center at 1451 Fourth St. SE. To streamline processing services, the reception center has representatives from finance, medical, housing, pass and ID, military personnel flights and TMO agencies.

Albuquerque, Carnuel, Cedar Crest, Edgewood, Rio Rancho, Tijeras and other neighboring communities provide housing, employment and other services to military families at Kirtland AFB. Kirtland AFB is located southwest of the city of Albuquerque. About 560,500 people live in the city. Kirtland AFB has a mild, dry desert climate. In summer, daytime temperatures soar into the 80s and low 90s, but low humidity and cool nights provide respite. In winter, average highs are in the 40s and 50s, while average lows are in the 20s. Kirtland AFB receives only 9 inches of rain and about 10 inches of snow each year.
